How to Transport Bikes Safely
Packaging Bikes for Transit
Prepare your bike by removing pedals and, if needed, handlebars to reduce width. Slightly deflate tyres to avoid pressure changes. Use a purpose-built bike box or wooden crate; alternatively wrap the frame and components in bubble wrap and secure in a double-walled carton. Protect vulnerable parts (derailleurs, shifters, saddle) with padding and prevent movement with internal supports. For items over 25 kg or very large bikes, palletise the shipment and book tail-lift pickup if required. See full packaging requirements.
Labelling and Documentation for Bike Shipments
After booking with Transdirect, you’ll be supplied with shipping labels for your items. Each item is issued a unique label, which must be securely fixed to each item. If labels are not affixed correctly, a Futile Collection fee may apply. For international shipments, please ensure all appropriate customs documentation has been supplied.
What Bikes Can You Ship with Transdirect?
Examples of Eligible Bikes
You can ship many types of bicycles, including:
- Road bikes and racing bikes
- Mountain bikes and downhill bikes
- Hybrid and commuter bikes
- E-bikes (ensure battery rules are followed)
- Kids’ bikes, BMX and unicycles
- Frames and wheel sets (packed separately)
Restrictions and Items Requiring Special Handling
Prohibited or restricted items include unapproved lithium batteries outside courier rules – check specific battery shipping policies for e-bikes. Very long or oversized frames may require pallet freight. Any bike or component considered dangerous goods (e.g. loose batteries, fuel-contaminated parts) cannot be carried. Items over 5 metres (500cm) in length are not accepted; anything over 25 kg should be palletised or split into multiple parcels. Read our dangerous goods shipping policy.
